Seahawks add Ryan Grigson to front office staff

Many Seattle Seahawks fans feel that if ever there was a time that GM John Schneider was “robbed” of the Executive of the Year award, it came in 2012 when the prize went over to Ryan Grigson of the Indianapolis Colts. Six years later, Schneider now has Grigson working for him.

There has not yet been any confirmation on what position Grigson will hold with the Seahawks.

A sixth round pick in 1995, Grigson had a very brief NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals and Detroit Lions, eventually landing in the CFL. He eventually returned to the NFL in 1999 as an area scout for the St. Louis Rams’ team that won the Super Bowl, staying in that organization until 2003. Grigson spent the next eight years in the front office of the Philadelphia Eagles, working his way up to Director of Player Personnel before being hired as the GM of the Colts in 2012.

In his first season with Indianapolis, Grigson was handed the number one pick and the most hyped prospect since Peyton Manning. To his credit, the Colts made a few other nice picks besides Andrew Luck in 2012, including T.Y. Hilton, Dwayne Allen, and Coby Fleener. All of those picks came on days one and two however and Grigson found little more with his next six picks. That team won nine of their last 11 games and made the playoffs a year after going 2-14, but they also played in the worst division in football.

He then traded a first round pick for Trent Richardson and wasted another on Bjoern Werner. In 2015, Indy got roasted for drafting receiver Phillip Dorsett in the first round. Overall, Grigson’s drafts provided little additional support, the free agent moves were underwhelming in free agency and proved to be underwhelming during the seasons, and as the rest of the division improved, they dropped to a .500 record from 2015-2016.

Grigson was fired at the conclusion of the 2016 season.

He spent last year with the 0-16 Cleveland Browns as a senior personnel executive and he was not retained at season’s end. This is not the first time Schneider has hired a former GM who was widely panned for his move, as the Seahawks hired former Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland as a draft consultant in 2014. Ireland is now the assistant GM for the New Orleans Saints.

Grigson’s job duties will be far more limited as a personnel assistant than they were as a GM, and given that he did have success with the Eagles, it may prove to be a good move for Schneider. And for that, we can give him Executive of the Year finally. Right?
